This is the new Blue Engineering website – we are currently in the process of moving all content from the old website. At the moment, only a first part – our digital construction kit – is available here on the new website. Gradually, all other content will also be transferred. Until then, the old website can still be accessed via the following link: http://blue-eng.km.tu-berlin.de/index.php/Hauptseite

We ask for your patience – and look forward to being able to present the completely revised site soon!

From June 12 to 13, 2025, the 3rd I-BNE Conference – Interdisciplinary Education for Sustainable Development – took place at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg. The aim of the conference was to highlight the potential and challenges of education for sustainable development using concrete practical examples. This time, the focus was on the interplay between interdisciplinarity and interculturality in university teaching.

From March 19 to 21, 2025, Fulda University of Applied Sciences once again welcomed visitors with the words: “Clear the ring!” For its fourth appearance, the Wander Circus found a new playground here – Hall 8 was transformed into a circus tent, a thinking space, and a carnival of ideas all at once. Twenty new travelers from the fields of education, democracy, and sustainability joined the colorful ensemble, including a voice from the Blue Engineering team at TU Berlin.

From September 30 to November 21, 2024, the SCREW LOOSE, SHORT FUSE toolbox was on display at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences – more precisely, in the library at the Krefeld campus. During these seven weeks, the library became not only a place for reading and learning, but also a space for wonder, discussion, and questioning. And it was a hit: over 15,000 visitors took advantage of the offer – an increase of around 30 percent compared to the usual visitor numbers.

On June 22, 2024, the Chair of Machinery Systems Design—which is affiliated with Blue Engineering at TU Berlin—opened its red doors wide for the Long Night of Science. Together with other departments, the Machine rySystems Laboratory was transformed from afternoon until late at night into a “house of machines” to showcase the teaching and research that takes place here. As the Blue Engineering team, we presented our SCREW LOOSE, SHORT FUSE toolbox.

From October 28 to 30, 2024, the Wander Circus made its third stop—this time in the best hall at the University of Göttingen. The event brings together teachers, students, and education activists from various universities to explore new ways of democratic and critically sustainable university teaching. A member of the Blue Engineering team was also there, contributing perspectives from the Berlin seminar to the tension between seriousness and magic.

From March to June 2024, the SCREW LOOSE, SHORT FUSE toolbox was set up at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS). This was made possible by the cooperation with the Center for Ethics and Responsibility (ZEV) and the university library, which provided both locations – Sankt Augustin and Rheinbach. A diverse accompanying program with guided tours, readings, discussions, and a Blue Engineers seminar brought the topics of ethics, responsibility, and technology design into conversation and invited students and visitors alike to reflect on society, technology, and their own actions.

The SEFI Annual Conference 2024 took place from September 2 to 5 at EPFL in Lausanne and focused on how engineers can be trained to combine technical excellence with social and environmental responsibility. Under the theme of Educating Responsible Engineers, participants from all over Europe discussed how engineering education can contribute to a socially and environmentally sustainable society – especially given that technology not only offers solutions, but is often also part of complex problems. A lecturer from the Blue Engineering Seminar at TU Berlin took part in the conference and used the opportunity for an intensive exchange with colleagues from teaching and research.

From April 10 to 12, 2024, the SEFI Spring School on Democracy in Engineering Education took place at the Technical University of Berlin. The Spring School was organized for the first time jointly by the two SEFI Special Interest Groups for Ethics and Sustainability and addressed the provocative key question: “Do we need ethics or sustainability in engineering education – and how do we make this decision?” Inspired by the children's book “Kroko oder Krake? Du musst dich entscheiden!” (Crocodile or Octopus? You Have to Decide!), the event playfully yet seriously addressed the issues of freedom of choice, responsibility, and participation in technical education. One of the Blue Engineering lecturers actively participated, exchanged ideas with the participants, and contributed perspectives from the Berlin seminar.

The annual conferences of SEFI – the European Society for Engineering Education – are the most important specialist conferences on this topic in Europe. In 2023, the conference was held under the title Engineering Education for Sustainability at TU Dublin from September 11 to 14 and provided a broad forum for exchange on issues of sustainable technology design, ethical responsibility, and innovative teaching formats. Two lecturers from the Blue Engineering team at TU Berlin were on site to present the SCREW LOOSE, SHORT FUSE toolbox through the paper Screw Loose Toolbox.
